La Crescent Area Healthy Community Partnership

 

 

Neighbors Day - An annual one-day event that assists older adults with spring yard work.  Volunteers work in teams to rake lawns, clean up gardens, and wash windows.  This program is organized by a committee of volunteers who plan and coordinate the annual event which started in April of 2006.

 

 

 

Neighbors in Action - Begin in July of 2007 with a start-up grant from the State of Minnesota Department of Human Services.  The purpose of the program is to provide services to older and disabled adults in La Crescent, Hokah and the surrounding areas that will help them remain living in their own homes and avoid assisted living or skilled nursing home placement.  The program provides the following services by mobilizing volunteers:

         Outdoor chores: show shoveling, lawn mowing, leaf raking

         Light housekeeping

         Transportation for appointments and errands

         Companionship, friendly visiting and respite for caregivers

         Social and educational opportunities

Neighbors in Action employs one full-time program coordinator and two part-time office assistants (5 hours each weekly).  www.lacrescentneighbors.org

 

Active Living La Crescent - Began in August of 2008 with a contract from Blue Cross/Blue Shield of MN.  The programs focus is to make physical activity a routine part of daily lives through collaborative planning, community action, and public policy.  The vision is to create healthy people and a healthy environment for La Crescent.  Active Living includes:

           Safe Routes to School

           The Bike Shoppe

           Hiking and Biking Trails, and Greenway development

           Walkablility and Bikeability assessments and projects

           Zoning and policy assessment and development

Active Living La Crescent has one full-time program manager, a part-time administrative assistant (10-15 hours/week), a part-time Safe Routes to School Coordinator (10-15 hours/week), and three art-time employees that work in the Bike Shoppe during the summer.

 

Touching Moments Animal Assisted Activities - Began in the summer of 2010.  The purpose to the organization is to provide enjoyment and enrichment to the lives of individuals through the use of animal assisted activities.  Volunteers take their certified pets (all dogs complete the Canine Good Citizenship Certification) to facilities throughout Houston County (nursing homes, libraries, schools, daycares) to be pet and socialize.  Touching Moments is a volunteer organization that has no employees. www.touchmoments.org

 

Appleseed Community Theatre - started in 2002 and became an HCP partner program in January of 2011.  Appleseed Community Theatre aims to provide opportunities for La Crescent area youth and adults to participate in the theatrical experience, as actors, volunteers, production staff, and audience members.  ACT produces two productions each year including their summer show which has 6-8 performances and utilizes over 100 volunteers including actors, stage and production crew, musicians, and others.  ACT cosponsors a fundraising production for Neighbors in Action each fall.  ACT is run by a volunteer committee and pays small stipends to directors and others for each show. www.appleseedtheatre.org
